A PLACE AT TWO TABLES
One for writing, one for life. You're warmly invited to both.
Hello dear friends,
A few of you have asked me what The Second Table is all about and how that sits within my Substack portfolio, and what it all means. So I thought I would send an update to clarify this.
Over the past two years, The Writers Cafe has grown into a wonderful community of readers, writers and storytellers. It has been a place where I’ve shared my writing journey, publishing adventures, lessons learned, and the occasional glimpse behind the scenes.
That isn’t changing.
What is changing is that I’ve realised there are other conversations I’d also like to have. Conversations about life, creativity, relationships, purpose, resilience, curiosity, and what it means to continue growing as we move through different seasons of life.
That’s why I’ve created a second publication:
The Second Table.
Think of it this way:
☕ The Writers Cafe is where we’ll continue to gather around writing and storytelling.
🌼 The Second Table is where we’ll gather for thoughtful conversations about living well, embracing change, and making the most of the years ahead.
What you can expect

I’m also exploring the idea of serialising my novel Secrets in the Lakes here on Substack.
The first chapters would be available to all subscribers, with later chapters available to paid subscribers. It’s a wonderful way to read the story as it unfolds and to support my work at the same time.
I hope that these two publications complement one another.
One table for writers.
One table for life.
And you’re warmly invited to join me at either or both.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
With gratitude,
Sal xo

Author of:
Secrets in the Lakes is a compelling blend of romantic suspense, women’s fiction, and psychological mystery. It captures the intimacy of small-town life, the thrill of a twisting investigation, and the heartbreak of second chances. Themes of grief, guilt, redemption, and the courage to love again pulse beneath every page.
Perfect for readers who love Diane Chamberlain, Jodi Picoult, or Liane Moriarty, this story delivers all the tension of a domestic thriller with the heart of a small-town romance. It’s a gripping exploration of trust, forgiveness, and what happens when loyalty collides with truth.
Shorter Than a Coffee Break is a beautifully crafted collection of short stories and drabbles (100-word flash fiction pieces) written by Danish-Australian author Sal Gallaher. Each story began with a single word and grew into a moment of truth, a flicker of emotion, or a twist of fate. These stories capture the full spectrum of life: its humour, heartbreak, resilience, and hope.
The Word Between Us is a collection of contemporary short stories, each inspired by a single word and written from the heart. From that simple beginning, each story unfolds into moments of quiet tension, connection, and change.
Set within the familiar rhythms of everyday life, these stories explore relationships, family, memory, and the unspoken spaces between people.
A marriage begins to shift under the weight of what isn’t said.
A small act of openness ripples through an entire community.
A woman learns to reshape her life when the house finally grows quiet.
Told with careful observation and emotional depth, these stories capture the small turning points that often go unnoticed — yet change everything.
